Bioresorbable pins are experiencing a growing interest and a likewise increasing use in orthopedic surgery for bone fixation. Indeed, such devices are naturally degraded by the human body and a subsequent surgery for their removal is not needed. In this framework, following its intrinsic philosophy of reducing the overall impact into patients and the medical paradigm that healing is better than just repairing, IBI is developing an innovative polymeric bioresorbable pin with high rotational stability, meant to be used in orthopedic applications on small segments fixations: SwissPin®. With a proprietary design, a star shaped cross-section, and developed using the “safety by design” approach, SwissPin® has been engineered to optimize mechanical performances, torsional support and stability over the first 2 months post-op, ensuring then a progressive resorption that overall allows a perfect bone fusion.
Having successfully completed also ex vivo tests, IBI now commits to the final stages of product certification to have it soon on the market.
